California Conference Center

Pasadena, California, USA | Mixed Use Conference Center | Spring 2017

The Conference Center hosts small academic and research-oriented conferences for companies in the technology sector in Southern California. The studio, focusing on work environments, questioned the role of physical space in the future of work.

The scheme inverts the planning conventions of typical office environments: taking an elevator up to your office floor, only interacting with those immediately surrounding you. The program of the conference center, which forefronts social interactions and networking, requires an architecture that disrupts the compartmentalization of typical offices. The scheme uses a language of shifting floorplates and bridging staircases to encourage circulation between program areas. A formally fractured building is actually more socially unified.

Variation in floor and ceiling heights allows the program spaces flexibility for the needs of different conferences. The staggered floors are supported by a structural system using tree columns, which allow for the long spans necessary for multiple auditoria. Like the tree columns, the building expands in floor area as it ascends, creating outdoor overhangs for fluid connections between inside and out, which take advantage of the ideal Pasadena weather.
